Born in Selangor. He received his early Malay and English primary education in Penang. He was offered a Penang Straits Settlement Scholarship to continue his Secondary education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) Perak from 1950 to 1958. From then on, he completed his two years Teachers Training Course (1959-1960), wherein he became a secondary school teacher, for 10 years, specializing in English and Physical Education. He furthered his tertiary education at the University of Malaya, wherein he obtained an Honours Degree in the English studies (1970-1974) and after graduation he taught English for more than 10 years. He then continued to obtain his Masters in English studies at the University Malaya (1985 – 1987).
